Why Your Abandoned Cart Emails Are Not Working (and How to Fix Them)
If abandoned cart emails are not sending or not converting, the issue is usually tracking, timing, or trust — not the idea itself. Here is a fix list.
Abandoned cart emails fail for boring technical reasons and fixable copy problems more often than “email is dead.” Run this checklist before you rebuild your whole brand.
Technical checks
- Is the flow live and not paused?
- Are product blocks rendering on mobile?
- Is the checkout recovery link correct for your platform?
- Are browsers and logged-out users tracked as you expect?
- Are you filtering people who already purchased?
Timing and sequence
One email is rarely enough. A simple 2–3 message sequence (reminder → social proof or FAQ → incentive if appropriate) outperforms a single guilt trip. Wait long enough to avoid sniping active checkouts.
Copy and offer problems
- Subject lines that sound like spam
- No product image or wrong variant
- Discounting too early and training customers to wait
- Ignoring shipping cost as the real blocker
Measurement
Track placed-order rate, revenue per recipient, and unsubscribe rate. Fix deliverability if open rates collapse across all flows, not just cart.
We repair and rebuild flows in email marketing engagements. Pair with clearer product pages via ecommerce content when the email is fine but the PDP loses the sale.
When a discount is appropriate
If analytics show shipping cost or price sensitivity as the blocker, a late-sequence incentive can help. If customers abandon to compare products, improve PDP clarity and social proof instead of training everyone to wait for 10% off.
Cross-channel recovery
Email is not the only recovery path. SMS (with consent), retargeting ads, and on-site chat for high-intent visitors can support the same goal. Keep messaging consistent so customers do not get three conflicting offers in one day.
