Why Tumblr is Important for Business Social Media Marketing.
Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their tumblelog.
A tumblelog is quite simply a vehicle to allow sharing of all the above forms of communication directly from your browser, phone, desktop, email or wherever you happen to be. Tumblr is currently the number 13 website on the internet with over 8 billion page views for month, and as of March 2013, 71.7 million posts were created on the site each day. Last year in 2014, Tumblr really came into it’s own and became one of the biggest platforms out there. Based on the numbers alone, it stands out as a must have component of any serious marketing program.
In this article we will take a closer look at Tumblr which is one platform we utilize and highly recommend as part of a comprehensive business social media marketing campaign.
Demographics:
Tumblr’s audience is young and smart and seriously engaged in social media activity. According to Quantcast, Tumblr indexes very highly for people aged 18-24 & the majority of their visitors have attended college. Although their income demographic is currently under $50k, that will change rapidly as they continue on with their schooling and careers. Any brand or company who wants to reach teens or millennials can not ignore this valuable target audience. Many youth-friendly brands have already started building their own Tumblr presences. Brands from luxury and mass marketing verticals have jumped in. Kate Spade, Adidas. Spotify, N.B.A., Whole Foods, Audi and Land Rover are already on Tumblr in a big way.
Facebook & Others vs. Tumblr:
You well ask yourself; can’t I get the same exposure on Twitter & Facebook? It is a fact that a decade ago in the beginning, the ONLY people on Facebook were college students. These same youths are too old to be teens or Millennials now. Then older folks, moms, dads, aunts and grandpas started joining Facebook in droves so that today, while FB still has plenty of young people, many are migrating to other platforms that they consider more with-it and up-to-date for them & their peers. Tumblr is one such magnet for this important demographic.
Well how about Twitter? There are some indications that teens and Millenials have been slower to join Twitter than other age groups. Recently, Garry Tan, the co-founder of Posterous, surveyed over a thousand people & discovered that teens are using Tumblr more than Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. True, this is only one small survey but it does demonstrate the increasing importance of Tumblr.
Another factor in considering Tumblr is that Facebook and Twitter are becoming more and more crowded every day. With over four million businesses on Facebook and a constant flow on Twitter, it’s getting harder to be noticed. We are not downplaying the importance of the other major players, but it just illustrates our contention that you need all the major platforms to establish a Broad Spectrum Social Media presence for your brand. While Tumblr has many respected and forward thinking companies, the brand adoption rate hasn’t yet exploded. It’s like the old adage get yourself a presence on Tumblr “before everyone else finds out about it!” Companies are more likely to be noticed on Tumblr by virtue of the higher share of voice they will enjoy.
We make certain that our clients are in every single platform applicable to their brand, including Tumblr.
